I am a little late to the whole 'reviewing the new Black Panther movie' thing... There were so many films to watch before the oscars - films that were nominated to one or several categories - that I didn't get around to watching the Black Pather until today... A couple of hours ago in fact.
Let me start by saying this: I really liked this film
The Black Panther opens our eyes to how enriching it can be to embrace the many cultures that exist on our planet.
The music in this film is fantastic. It embodies the point I am trying to make. The original score has a lot of drums a lot of sounds that immediately evokes traditional African music, actually, many different types of traditional African music... The composer did a lot of research and some trekking around Africa and used all of those influences when composing the movie's original score.
This is very original I think... We don't see a lot of world music in movies. But it's not just that... I do my best to embrace the ideal of infinite diversity in infinite combinations, but most of the time I listed to the same types of music... English or american songs, same old same old. That's not wrong. I really like that type of music and I will continue to listen to it. But I also want to open myself up to more music. More languages. More culture, from all over the world... The composer of the black Panther original score talked about how he worked on this score and it's wonderful to hear him speak... The way he explains the instruments... Instruments I didn't even know existed! It's wonderful to watch...
The movie soundtrack also features a variety of African artists... But it's not just the music... It's more. The movie explores African culture in the landscapes that we see, the animals, even the colours and patterns of the garments the people of Wakanda wear... And there's richness like this everywhere, in every corner of the planet, far away and close to home.
There's a lot more to be said about this movie but I think I'll stop here for today... Finish the weekend with some of the movie's great music:
